Bogyoke Market Yangon

Buying jade at Yangon Bogyoke Market

Also other precious stones, gold and oriental things. That is an old-fashioned bazaar still original from colonial times. There are around 50 jade shops with a great diversity, from small items such as rings to bigger Buddha statues and other sculptures, everything is available.

The pulsating heart of Yangon was built during colonial times and named after  Mr. Gavin Scott. After Myanmar’s independence in 1948 it was renamed to Mr. Bogyoke Aung San  who was the father of Ms. Aung San Suu Kyi but until about 20 years ago people always used Scott Market when they talked about.

Although established not so long ago as some other oriental bazaars it is one of the most interesting in Asia because since opening nothing has been changed, it’s really exotic.

Narrow alleys are packed with a wide variety of shops, this is the great Oriental bazaar, where gold, silver, rubies, sapphires, amber, brass and bronze goods glitter. A strictly dry market, no food, fruits and other stuff are sold but outside at the front some are available. Buying anything needs bargaining and when you are firm you might make a good deal.
