Studying the green stone automatically leads to a better knowledge of Chinese art. The shape of some carved objects could not be ascertained if they were not made from a durable stone. One of the early uses was for funeral purposes mainly from the Shang and Western Chou. Most items used in later times could also be for practical purposes.

The adornment on the stone augments show symbolic representations and decorative patterns similar as with bronze or other art material. The repertory depends upon the art market which in this case thrives upon the spoils of grave robbers. The interest of the thieves has been centered upon large representational and valuable objects. This point of view is responsible for a great loss of countless items in general. Fortunately jade, as a precious stone, always attracted attention and was probably never just thrown away.

Shapes and symbolic representations of items made during the Shang have many relations with objects found on the shores of the Mediterranean and its hinterlands this is not accidental. Connections between western and the earliest historical art of China have been observed many times before. They raise the question how these two antiquities communicated.

The style in Chinese art history.

The style in Chinese art history gains much by the study of the mineral. A Neolithic stage and the possible lingering of its style is still a matter of conjecture. The early Western Chou can be consider as a kind of creator of Chinese art related to bronzes and jades with some clear stylistic elements.
After around 950 B.C. the dating again becomes more easy and for the second time in the history connection to western countries became visible, this time not only through shapes but also through stylist figures.

Late Eastern Chou art may have other relatives in Central Europe. The basic definitions of style, resulting from an analysis of jade objects, have been presented before by scholars who investigated bronze art. The green stone shows characteristics of different creative periods more precisely and in more detail than the metals. Nephrite objects are the work of artists who approach the refinement and technical skills of jewelers, consciously creating objects of artistic merit.

All art objects from the period called the Three Kingdoms and Six Dynasties have any proof for dating. Attributions in any medium are made exclusively upon a stylistic base with the exception of stone sculptures, some of which bear dated inscriptions.

The traditional element in monumental stone sculpture.

Traditional elements are well illustrated by the animals from funeral alleys near Nanjing; dated around the fifth and sixth century. The great novelty of the period is emerging Buddhist art is known through numerous sculptures, many of them inscribed and dated. Although  stone and bronze were mainly used for religious purposes, it is not surprising to find jade occasionally.

A few Buddhist objects in jade follow the current architectural style without adding any new elements. Other subjects rendered in the gem material, and attributed to the period are similar to the Han dynasty. The dated stone animals indicate the trend of traditional art during the period of the Six Dynasties. Interest is concentrated on the fantastic and hybrid animals, by mixing heterogeneous forms and elaborating them, but at the same time treating them not formal but as if they were beings which, although born of imagination and tradition, could easily exist in reality.

Jade attributed to these four hundred years still continue the traditional tendency. But if so, every ornament shows clearly an imitative character. Aside from the traditional use it becomes just another stone, subjected to the inescapable style of the period.
